  • Permit

Hamilton requires a Temporary Lane and Sidewalk Occupancy Permit for short-term occupation of a roadway lane or sidewalk. The City requests at least 5 days’ notice and payment when the permit is issued.[1]

  • Street access

Hamilton uses a separate road-closure application when a whole roadway or direction of traffic is blocked beyond its stated 3–5-minute threshold. Processing needs at least 2 weeks’ notice; the City asks applicants to exhaust alternatives first.[1]

  • Street access

Hamilton allows a truck to leave its designated network to reach a delivery property by the shortest necessary link on non-designated streets; the return also uses the shortest link. This is destination access, not a residential shortcut across the city. Other posted restrictions still apply.[2][3]

  • Street access

Hamilton restricts trucks with more than four axles on parts of its downtown/lower-city network, including Claremont Access. Some routes around Bay Street North, Stuart Street and Queen Street North operate only in daytime. Match the vehicle and arrival time to the signed route and applicable destination-access exception.[3]

  • Bulky items

Hamilton bulk pickup accepts up to 4 items per booking, subject to item size, weight and preparation requirements. The online service is limited to eligible curbside properties with no more than 5 units and excludes townhomes; online requests are collected in 2 weeks, while telephone requests need at least 1 week’s notice.[4]

  • Change of address

When your address changes within Ontario, you must update your driver’s licence and vehicle permit within 6 days. The licence can be changed online or at ServiceOntario; the replacement vehicle permit must be collected at a ServiceOntario centre in exchange for the old permit.[5]

How these figures were produced

  • Hypothetical Downtown Hamilton → Hamilton Mountain example: an input distance of 11.8 km and duration of 16 min. Actual addresses can produce a different route.
  • 2 bedrooms: two bedroom sets, a sofa and armchair, a dining set for four, a desk and 40 boxes (754 cu ft, 3,326 lb).
  • Base estimate: Plus tier, ground floor at both addresses.
  • This comparison isolates the short-notice time allowance: with other risk factors, it can rise from 10% to 15%. It does not calculate every adjustment for an actual booking date.
  • The crew is what the model assigns: it grows with volume, weight and the number of items of 150 lb or more.
  • Neutral scenario with no booking date, postal-zone or capacity adjustment. Your selected date, addresses and services can change the quote.
  • Pricing version moving-freight-tax-ca-20260810-v2, captured 2026-09-27. Moving base amounts are in CAD before tax, with upward rounding in $25 increments.

Local details that change the estimate

Downtown buildings, mountain access, and mixed suburban homes create very different move-day access plans across Hamilton.

Downtown towers and newer mid-rise stock still need timed elevator and loading coordination.

Escarpment grades, downtown parking rules, and tighter residential streets can alter truck flow quickly.

Packing becomes more valuable when escarpment access, fragile older homes, or tighter GTA-linked timing reduce prep room.

Quote FAQ

Can a shorter mapped route be used as the Hamilton truck approach?

Check the actual truck, axle count, signs and destination exception. The exception permits only the necessary shortest connection between the designated network and delivery property; it is not a citywide residential shortcut. A model distance does not certify the truck approach.

Is the municipal bulk pickup part of the moving estimate?

Book it separately and confirm the property’s eligibility and preparation limits. Hamilton’s online and telephone services have different lead times; identify the confirmed collection date before reducing the inventory shown to the mover.
