Official rules to confirm before requesting a quote

Latest source review: September 29, 2026. Individual access dates appear below.

  • Permit

Winnipeg Public Works handles Use of Street permits separately from truck or special-mobile-machine permits. Vehicles exceeding Highway Traffic Act or City Traffic By-law limits require the applicable vehicle permit. Describe the actual loading footprint and vehicle to Public Works rather than treating a moving booking as street permission.[1]

  • Permit

Winnipeg’s Streets By-law requires payment before a Use of Street permit is issued where fees apply. A required damage deposit can be used to remedy damage from the permitted activity; the remaining deposit is returned after the activity ends. Confirm the permit’s conditions separately from the mover’s quote.[2]

  • Bulky items

Winnipeg’s extra-garbage and large-item pickup is a paid service, allowing up to 10 large items per pickup. Request it at least 2 full business days before regular collection; the City confirms the pickup day. Changes or cancellations also need 2 full business days’ notice.[3]

  • Change of address

MPI requires you to notify an Autopac agent or Manitoba Public Insurance within 15 days of a name or address change. This is separate from arranging the household-goods delivery.[4]

  • Driver’s licence

Most new Manitoba residents must exchange their valid driver’s licence and change vehicle registration and insurance within 3 months. MPI identifies exceptions for Canadian residents attending full-time postsecondary studies; commercial licence exchanges require separate confirmation.[5]

How these figures were produced

  • Hypothetical Transcona → Saint-Boniface example: an input distance of 9.6 km and duration of 14 min. Actual addresses can produce a different route.
  • 2 bedrooms: two bedroom sets, a sofa and armchair, a dining set for four, a desk and 40 boxes (754 cu ft, 3,326 lb).
  • Base estimate: Plus tier, ground floor at both addresses.
  • This comparison isolates the short-notice time allowance: with other risk factors, it can rise from 10% to 15%. It does not calculate every adjustment for an actual booking date.
  • The crew is what the model assigns: it grows with volume, weight and the number of items of 150 lb or more.
  • Neutral scenario with no booking date, postal-zone or capacity adjustment. Your selected date, addresses and services can change the quote.
  • Pricing version moving-freight-tax-ca-20260810-v2, captured 2026-09-27. Moving base amounts are in CAD before tax, with upward rounding in $25 increments.

Local details that change the estimate

Downtown buildings and suburban homes behave very differently here, so access planning still matters even when mileage stays local.

Downtown residential towers still rely on elevator and loading coordination despite the city having more driveway-friendly stock overall.

Winter snow, curb clearance, and longer residential drive legs can change the truck plan quickly.

Packing is useful when winter conditions, long suburban drive legs, or fragile basement storage make the move harder to stage cleanly.

Quote FAQ

Does the Winnipeg street-use deposit belong to this modeled moving charge?

The City’s permit payment and any damage deposit follow the permitted street activity. Confirm those conditions independently; the displayed engine example is a household-goods calculation and does not certify a City permission or absorb its deposit.

When should discarded large items be removed from the Winnipeg inventory?

After arranging the City pickup or another disposal plan. The paid municipal service needs two full business days’ notice and the City confirms the collection day; leaving unwanted items behind without that arrangement does not make them collected.
