Long-distance moving quote with corridor planning

Long-distance quotes need the route plan and the building plan to stay aligned.

Official rules to confirm before requesting a quote

Latest source review: September 29, 2026. Individual access dates appear below.

  • Health coverage

For an eligible new resident, the normal MSP waiting period is the remainder of the month residency is established plus two months. Apply promptly; the ministry determines the residency date, and visitor status, military exemptions or exceptional waivers can change the timing.[1]

  • Vehicle

A private vehicle imported from another province generally needs a B.C. inspection at a designated facility and a signed inspection report before registration. Vehicle category and inspection exemptions matter; confirm the requirements with ICBC or CVSE before booking.[2][3]

  • Health coverage

If you move to Alberta from another province and plan to stay 12 months or more, you must register for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) within 3 months of establishing residency, through a registry agent.[4][5][6]

  • Driver’s licence

New Ontario residents have 60 days to exchange their licence. Eligible Canadian licences may be exchanged, with requirements depending on class, status and driving experience; learner permits and certain other licence categories are excluded.[7][8]

  • Health coverage

A person moving to Manitoba from another Canadian province or territory who intends to live there for at least 6 months is encouraged to apply for Manitoba Health within 3 months of arrival. Eligible coverage starts on the first day of the third month after arrival; Canadian military families have a waiting-period exemption.[9]

  • Driver’s licence

Most new Manitoba residents must exchange their valid driver’s licence and change vehicle registration and insurance within 3 months. MPI identifies exceptions for Canadian residents attending full-time postsecondary studies; commercial licence exchanges require separate confirmation.[10]

  • Permit

Halifax By-law S-300 prohibits obstructing a street without first obtaining a permit from the Engineer. The Engineer may impose conditions, require a damage deposit or refuse permission in the public interest. A proposed loading or container arrangement must be assessed before relying on the street space.[11]

What changes a quote in our pricing model

Illustrative pricing-model estimate in CAD, before tax. Your addresses, date, inventory and services determine your quote.

Illustrative example — Toronto → Vancouver: estimates by home size and tier

No automatic price is available for these model scenarios. A coordinator must confirm the inventory, access and route before preparing the quote.

How these figures were produced

  • Assumptions for this example: 4,423 km and 58 h 47 min of driving. Confirm the route for the move's addresses and conditions.
  • Above 1,800 km, this model version requires coordinator assessment before a price can be offered.
  • Neutral scenario with no booking date, postal-zone or capacity adjustment. Your selected date, addresses and services can change the quote.
  • Packing labour, storage, disassembly and other add-ons are not included.
  • Model version moving-freight-tax-ca-20260810-v2, captured 2026-09-27. This calculation confirms no truck availability or dates.

Local details that change the estimate

Long-distance quotes need the route plan and the building plan to stay aligned.

Share building type, floor count, stairs, elevator rules, parking or loading access, and any fragile rooms before the quote is finalized.

Flag packing, storage, disposal, or delivery-window constraints early so the estimate does not hide a move-day surprise.

Quote FAQ

Which long-distance deadlines start from the resident’s arrival rather than the truck’s?

Use the actual province and residency date for health enrolment, licence exchange and vehicle inspection or registration. BC, Alberta, Ontario and Manitoba have different requirements, and household goods can arrive on a different day. Tell each authority your actual situation; a model driving duration is neither a residency determination nor a coverage start.

Can a reviewed long-distance price resolve Halifax unloading permissions?

No. A street obstruction requires prior Engineer permission under Halifax By-law S-300, potentially with conditions or a deposit. Show the actual receiving footprint before relying on public space; coordinator price review and municipal approval are separate decisions.

How does your pricing model price a long-distance move?

Up to 800 km, as crew and truck hours plus $0.85/km. Beyond that, as a dedicated truck with 2 drivers: driving, at an 85 km/h average and at most 11 hours a day, is billed separately with travel allowances and a partial empty return, plus $0.85/km. Over 1,800 km, a coordinator builds the quote.

What is a shared or partial load, and why offer it?

In the Montreal → Halifax example assuming 1,242 km, the dedicated-truck calculation gives $6,800 for the studio inventory and $7,100 for the 3-bedroom inventory, in CAD before tax. This is a cost illustration, not an available small-load quote: that load requires review. Above 800 km, loads up to 1,500 lb and 350 cu ft go to a coordinator who must confirm shared or partial-load options and pricing.

What driving duration does the Montreal → Halifax example use?

The calculation assumes 1,242 km, producing 2 road days at the model's pace (85 km/h and 11 hours per day), plus loading and unloading. Actual addresses, routing and dates must be confirmed.

Why is there no automatic price for Toronto → Vancouver?

This example assumes 4,423 km, above the captured version's 1,800 km automatic limit. A coordinator must assess the move before offering a price.

Does the moving date change the price?

Date and notice can change a quote. These examples use no booking date and exclude calendar, postal-zone and capacity adjustments. The short-notice comparison isolates only one model time allowance.
