Consumer protection
When a Québec consumer hires a mover by phone or online, the law requires a written contract, which the mover must send within 15 days; before concluding, the mover must disclose the total cost, payment terms and the move's date and time.[1]
Consumer protection
The OPC advises paying a mover no deposit, or a very small one; if a mover asks for payment more than two months ahead, check that it has a trust account and make the cheque payable to the company 'en fidéicommis'.[1]
Consumer protection
Before hiring a mover, the OPC suggests checking that it carries basic insurance on the goods moved and civil liability insurance of at least $1 million, and looking the company up with the OPC's 'Se renseigner sur un commerçant' tool.[1][2]
Consumer protection
A Québec mover cannot demand more than the price in the contract; faced with unplanned fees, the OPC says you may refuse to pay them, or pay 'sous protêt' (under protest) and then claim the excess with a formal demand letter.[3]
Vehicle
A Québec mover that uses a heavy vehicle (gross vehicle weight rating of 4,500 kg or more) must be registered in the Commission des transports du Québec's register of heavy vehicle owners and operators (RPEVL).[1][4][5]
Permit
Le Sud-Ouest charges $54 in issuance and review fees for a moving permit, plus extra fees depending on street type and area; applications are online only, and metered posts are hooded, with separate bills for hooding and lost parking revenue.[6][7][8]

If a mover hired by phone or online doesn't send the written contract within 15 days, the consumer can cancel within 30 days of concluding it; the mover must refund within 15 days after the cancellation notice is sent.
Contrary to popular belief, Québec consumers have no automatic 10-day period to back out of a moving contract, so the OPC advises not signing anything until you have truly decided on a mover.
If movers damage furniture or appliances, the OPC's steps are to negotiate compensation, then send a formal demand letter (mise en demeure), then go to small claims court with a professional's written repair estimate.
