Toronto to Ottawa-Gatineau moving cost guide

Treat this as a corridor planning range, not a flat quote. tower loading windows, downtown bay bookings, and tighter truck release timing and institutional access checks, protected unloading, and carefully timed delivery windows are what usually change the route plan.

Distance sets the baseline. Packing, storage, access, and delivery timing can still change the final route plan.

Toronto → Ottawa-Gatineau: rules that affect moving costs

Latest source review: September 29, 2026. Individual access dates appear below.

  • Bulky items

Toronto directs apartment and condominium residents to their building manager for furniture and appliance disposal locations. For items not accepted for reuse, its guidance allows oversized collection on garbage day where that service applies. Confirm the building’s arrangement before excluding furniture from the moving inventory.[1]

  • Permit

Ottawa says a moving vehicle that obeys existing parking rules needs no encroachment permit. A portable storage container occupying any part of the road right-of-way, including for loading or unloading, requires a temporary construction-related encroachment permit.[2]

  • Permit

Ottawa’s temporary-consideration parking permit does not cover moving-company vehicles or equipment using City streets. The City directs those requests to its temporary construction-related encroachment process.[3]

  • Permit

When an Ottawa encroachment permit is needed, the City states a minimum of 10 business days for issuance. Temporarily removing parking needs at least four business days’ notice; a Traffic Management Inspector reviews a proposed container or material placement after application. These are different steps, not approval guarantees.[2]

  • Parking

Ottawa’s loading-zone rule limits parking or stopping to 15 minutes or the maximum duration stated on the authorized signs, during their indicated days and hours. Check the actual sign before choosing the unloading place; a loading zone should not be treated as an all-day moving reservation.[4]

  • Change of address

When your address changes within Ontario, you must update your driver’s licence and vehicle permit within 6 days. The licence can be changed online or at ServiceOntario; the replacement vehicle permit must be collected at a ServiceOntario centre in exchange for the old permit.[5]

  • Change of address

Updating an Ontario driver’s licence or vehicle permit does not update Provincial Offences Court records. Anyone with an outstanding provincial-offence matter must contact that court directly to keep the address used for notices current.[5]

Pricing and planning FAQ

Can the entire Ottawa crew visit fit under a fifteen-minute loading sign?

Treat the sign-controlled duration independently of the engine’s crew-hours estimate. Ottawa’s rule is fifteen minutes or the authorized sign’s maximum at the displayed times. If the operation takes longer, resolve another lawful arrangement rather than pricing an unavailable bay as if it were held for the whole visit. Moving-company vehicles and equipment cannot use a Temporary Consideration permit for their operation; an encroachment request has its own review and notice. Send those exact receiving constraints with the inventory before the quote is finalized.
