Moving from Toronto to Vancouver: rules that apply

Latest source review: September 29, 2026. Individual access dates appear below.

  • Bulky items

Toronto directs apartment and condominium residents to their building manager for furniture and appliance disposal locations. For items not accepted for reuse, its guidance allows oversized collection on garbage day where that service applies. Confirm the building’s arrangement before excluding furniture from the moving inventory.[1]

  • Permit

Vancouver’s temporary street-occupancy permit covers moving trucks and containers. Allow 7–10 business days after payment for processing and signs. Requests with only 5–7 business days require staff assessment and are not guaranteed.[2]

  • Parking

Vancouver’s permit cannot displace a vehicle lawfully parked before signs were installed. Such a vehicle is not towed under the reservation, and the City does not refund the permit for that occupied space.[2]

  • Permit

When an oversize-truck permit is required in Vancouver, apply for a single trip at least 5 business days before travel and carry the permit in the vehicle. A temporary special-zone permit or utility approvals may also be needed. This is separate from reserving curb space and does not apply to every moving van.[3]

  • Permit

For temporary street occupation, Toronto requires dates, times and a plan of the proposed area. The permit cannot extend beyond the property’s street frontage unless the adjoining owner gives written consent and waives related claims against the City. Confirm the applicable permit with Right of Way Management for the actual equipment and address.[4]

  • Parking

Toronto’s temporary resident/guest permits are not general commercial-truck permits. Eligible vans or pickups must meet personal/family-use conditions, a maximum length of 5.2 m and registered gross weight of 3,000 kg.[5]

  • Health coverage

For an eligible new resident, the normal MSP waiting period is the remainder of the month residency is established plus two months. Apply promptly; the ministry determines the residency date, and visitor status, military exemptions or exceptional waivers can change the timing.[6]

  • Health coverage

For a move from another part of Canada, B.C. advises keeping the former provincial or territorial health plan during the MSP waiting period. Confirm that plan’s coverage dates for your transition.[6]

  • Driver’s licence

New B.C. residents have 90 days to switch to a B.C. driver’s licence. ICBC advises preparing the required documents and booking a driver-licensing appointment once they are ready.[7]

  • Vehicle

A private vehicle imported from another province generally needs a B.C. inspection at a designated facility and a signed inspection report before registration. Vehicle category and inspection exemptions matter; confirm the requirements with ICBC or CVSE before booking.[8][9]

  • Health coverage

If you leave Ontario to live permanently in another province, OHIP keeps covering you as if you were away temporarily until the last day of the second full month after you leave; you then need coverage in your new province.[10][11]

How we price long-distance moves, with example routes and shared loads

What we frame before the truck leaves

Departure checklist

tower loading windows, downtown bay bookings, and tighter truck release timing

Arrival checklist

condo arrival timing, protected unloading, and careful final-mile scheduling

Packing trigger

Packing is most useful when tower rules, fragile rooms, or compressed move windows leave almost no time for staging.

Storage trigger

Storage helps when tower bookings, possession dates, or renovation timing do not align neatly across the Lower Mainland.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the cross-country model result separate from both Vancouver permits and household enrolment?

The captured pricing example for this corridor exceeds the automatic-distance limit and needs coordinator review; that result cannot book an unloading area. Vancouver street occupancy normally requires seven to ten business days after payment and cannot displace previously parked vehicles. BC’s MSP waiting period and Ontario’s temporary coverage continuation need their own confirmation against the household’s residency date. Also settle the vehicle-inspection and licence-exchange requirements. Ask the Toronto building manager where unwanted furniture belongs before finalizing the inventory submitted for the coordinator’s assessment.
