Buildings
Halifax’s Centre Plan describes the North End precinct’s dominant low-rise, small-scale building forms, with distinct traditional architecture in its 2 special areas. It does not describe every North End address as a tower.[1]
Buildings
The North End 1 description identifies narrow side yards and varied, shallow front setbacks. These small gaps between buildings should not be assumed to provide a furniture or vehicle route.[1]
Buildings
North End 2 is described as compact lots and frontages, with narrow side yards and a high concentration of semi-detached and townhouse forms. A shared building line does not identify each unit’s entrance.[1]
Street access
Parks Canada describes Hydrostone houses facing green courtyards with access at the rear by service lanes, and shops with apartments above along Young Street. This is a specific North End subdistrict.[2]
Permit
Halifax By-law S-300 prohibits obstructing a street without first obtaining a permit from the Engineer. The Engineer may impose conditions, require a damage deposit or refuse permission in the public interest. A proposed loading or container arrangement must be assessed before relying on the street space.[3]
Bulky items
Halifax’s sorting guide permits 1 bulky furniture or appliance item per garbage collection for a single-unit home, and 2 per building for buildings with 2–6 units. Refrigeration appliances need CFC removal before curbside disposal; the guide directs residents to 311 to arrange it. Check the building’s actual collection arrangement before leaving furniture out.[4]

The federal description identifies courtyard-facing homes and rear service lanes in that subdistrict. Specify the actual rear or front entrance and approved vehicle approach for the individual unit.
North End 2 includes attached housing forms. Identify the unit, interior levels and any shared entry so the inventory and carry route describe your dwelling rather than the full row.
