Bulky items
Before leaving Calgary, separate the moving inventory from items being discarded. At City landfills, separate weighings can apply each material’s rate; one weighing charges the entire mixed load at its highest material rate. Commercial vehicles follow commercial rates and site rules, without access to free residential programs.[1]
Permit
Vancouver’s temporary street-occupancy permit covers moving trucks and containers. Allow 7–10 business days after payment for processing and signs. Requests with only 5–7 business days require staff assessment and are not guaranteed.[2]
Parking
Vancouver’s permit cannot displace a vehicle lawfully parked before signs were installed. Such a vehicle is not towed under the reservation, and the City does not refund the permit for that occupied space.[2]

When an oversize-truck permit is required in Vancouver, apply for a single trip at least 5 business days before travel and carry the permit in the vehicle. A temporary special-zone permit or utility approvals may also be needed. This is separate from reserving curb space and does not apply to every moving van.[3]

Calgary requires a Street Use Permit for exclusive use of its road right-of-way, including reserving moving space or placing a moving container. A curb no-parking restriction also needs a Temporary No Parking Permit, applied for together.[4]

Calgary has a separate special truck-route process for restricted-road travel in special circumstances. Apply through 311, or 403-268-2489 from outside the city. This permit has no fee; the requesting organization receives an approval letter only after approval. It is not required for every ordinary delivery.[5]

Calgary commercial landfill loads are charged by weight and material; a mixed load uses the highest applicable rate and staff decide acceptance, customer class and charges. Commercial loads containing designated recyclable or compostable material may receive the disposal surcharge or be refused. Separate these streams before arranging an unwanted-furniture load.[6]

For an eligible new resident, the normal MSP waiting period is the remainder of the month residency is established plus two months. Apply promptly; the ministry determines the residency date, and visitor status, military exemptions or exceptional waivers can change the timing.[7]

For a move from another part of Canada, B.C. advises keeping the former provincial or territorial health plan during the MSP waiting period. Confirm that plan’s coverage dates for your transition.[7]
Driver’s licence
New B.C. residents have 90 days to switch to a B.C. driver’s licence. ICBC advises preparing the required documents and booking a driver-licensing appointment once they are ready.[8]
Vehicle
A private vehicle imported from another province generally needs a B.C. inspection at a designated facility and a signed inspection report before registration. Vehicle category and inspection exemptions matter; confirm the requirements with ICBC or CVSE before booking.[9][10]

When you move from Alberta to another province, AHCIP covers you for the month you leave and the next 2 months; people leaving permanently must cancel AHCIP coverage at a registry agent or with AHCIP.[11]
Lease
An Alberta fixed-term tenancy ends on the date in the agreement without a legal notice requirement; unless the parties make other arrangements, the tenant must move out by noon. Advancing the departure before that date requires agreement or another applicable legal basis.[12]
Lease
An Alberta tenant ending a monthly periodic tenancy gives one tenancy month’s written notice. Late notice ends the tenancy at the end of the next complete tenancy month; the notice includes the address, termination date and signature.[12]

What changes if the Vancouver parking reservation is arranged only shortly before departure?
Vancouver asks for seven to ten business days after payment to issue a temporary street-occupancy permit. A request five to seven business days away needs direct assessment and has no approval guarantee. The permit cannot displace a vehicle legitimately parked before the signs were installed. Confirm these conditions before relying on an unloading area at arrival. Alberta departure health coverage and British Columbia enrolment are separate from truck access: coordinate the former coverage with the MSP waiting period and arrange the BC driving and vehicle requirements against your residency date.
