Bulky items
Vancouver Landfill limits mattress and box-spring recycling to 4 items per customer per day, effective June 1, 2025; Vancouver South Transfer Station also lists a 4-per-day maximum. For more than 4 mattresses, the City directs residents to a private recycler. Fees and acceptance conditions still apply; street or alley dumping is prohibited.[1]
Permit
Calgary requires a Street Use Permit for exclusive use of its road right-of-way, including reserving moving space or placing a moving container. A curb no-parking restriction also needs a Temporary No Parking Permit, applied for together.[2]
Parking
Calgary’s minimum review periods are 5, 10 or 15 business days according to impact, starting with a complete compliant application. The permit holder obtains authorized third-party signs and installs them at least 12 hours ahead, displaying the approved dates and times.[2]
Permit
Calgary has a separate special truck-route process for restricted-road travel in special circumstances. Apply through 311, or 403-268-2489 from outside the city. This permit has no fee; the requesting organization receives an approval letter only after approval. It is not required for every ordinary delivery.[3]
Health coverage
If you move to Alberta from another province and plan to stay 12 months or more, you must register for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) within 3 months of establishing residency, through a registry agent.[4][5][6]
Health coverage
For an eligible interprovincial resident who applies on time, AHCIP normally starts on the first day of the third month after establishing residency: July 12 means October 1. Confirm coverage with your previous plan during the transition; military families and families moving separately can have different dates.[4][5]
Driver’s licence
New Alberta residents with a valid licence from another Canadian province or territory must exchange it within 90 days; travel outside Alberta does not restart the period. Surrender the old licence at a registry agent. Under this Canadian exchange pathway, classes 3–6 require no knowledge or road test.[7]
Vehicle
New Alberta residents must switch their vehicle to an Alberta registration within 90 days of moving, at a registry agent, with proof of ownership, proof of valid insurance, ID and any required out-of-province inspection.[8]
Health coverage
For an ordinary permanent move from B.C. to another province, MSP covers the remainder of the departure month plus two months. An extension of up to three additional months may be granted for time in transit. Notify Health Insurance BC of your departure date and new address.[9]
Lease
British Columbia month-to-month tenants must give one full rental month’s written notice before the rent-due day. Most fixed terms continue month-to-month unless ended correctly; leaving a fixed term early can create compensation liability. Do not treat the moving booking as the tenancy notice.[10]
Lease
British Columbia tenants must normally leave by 1 p.m. on the last tenancy day, usually month-end. A different date or time needs an agreement in writing signed by both parties; coordinate the pickup window against that handover instead of assuming access all afternoon.[10]

How we price long-distance moves, with example routes and shared loads
Departure checklist
tower booking windows, rain-sensitive loading, and waterfront delivery constraints
Arrival checklist
driveway or condo arrival planning, protected unloading, and flexible staging
Packing trigger
Packing becomes more valuable when rain exposure, fragile rooms, or tight elevator windows leave little margin for error.
Storage trigger
Storage is useful when possession timing, weather disruptions, or phased business occupancy leave a gap between pickup and delivery.

Vancouver’s municipal mattress facilities limit the daily number of mattresses and box springs per customer; excess items go through a private recycling arrangement. Confirm who is disposing of the items before finalizing the transported inventory. For Calgary delivery, establish the street-use and truck-route permissions against the actual address, not the Vancouver parking permission. As a new Alberta resident, separate the licence and vehicle-registration deadlines from AHCIP enrolment and its coverage start. Keep former MSP coverage available during the transition, and verify any vehicle-inspection requirement before seeking Alberta plates.
Start with the complete compliant street-use application and the impact of the occupation. Calgary sets minimum review periods of five, ten or fifteen business days by impact, rather than one universal moving-day deadline. Once the dates and hours are authorized, the permit holder obtains approved third-party signs and places them at least twelve hours ahead with the approved period displayed. Arrange that local task with the receiving contact before the truck leaves BC. The twelve-hour sign rule is separate from the application review; it does not make a request submitted the day before acceptable or guarantee the receiving space.
