Residential movers: what official sources say

Latest source review: September 29, 2026. Individual access dates appear below.

  • Permit

Vancouver’s temporary street-occupancy permit covers moving trucks and containers. Allow 7–10 business days after payment for processing and signs. Requests with only 5–7 business days require staff assessment and are not guaranteed.[1]

  • Bulky items

Vancouver Landfill limits mattress and box-spring recycling to 4 items per customer per day, effective June 1, 2025; Vancouver South Transfer Station also lists a 4-per-day maximum. For more than 4 mattresses, the City directs residents to a private recycler. Fees and acceptance conditions still apply; street or alley dumping is prohibited.[2]

  • Bulky items

Vancouver excludes household batteries, propane tanks, paint, aerosols, medications, pesticides and cleaners from ordinary garbage, recycling and green bins. Its Waste Wizard identifies the proper route for each item. A Zero Waste Centre visit should be checked against the actual accepted-material list.[3]

  • Building rules

Canada’s moving checklist calls for elevator, stairway and parking access to be reserved or cleared at both addresses. Notify the landlord or building manager of the arrival time and confirm the actual building arrangements before assigning the crew’s unloading window.[4][5]

  • Health coverage

For an eligible new resident, the normal MSP waiting period is the remainder of the month residency is established plus two months. Apply promptly; the ministry determines the residency date, and visitor status, military exemptions or exceptional waivers can change the timing.[6]

Frequently asked questions

What must I confirm in the mover’s written inventory?

The federal moving checklist asks for a written quote identifying boxes, item sizes and values, payment terms, service time and special-care items. Tell the mover about every item before the estimate; adding items on moving day can change the cost.
